A little about Oasis

Oasis (in plural: Oases) is an area in a desert where the water reaches the surface, where the vegetation permited to grow because of enough moisture. The water may come up from the springs, so a permanent supply of fresh water is available. Oases vary in size from about 2.5 acres (1 hectare). This place around small spring to vast of areas of naturally watered. We can see people also live in this place. For example, the two-thirds of the populations of the Sahara live in oases. The date palm is the main source food. Other plants are citrus fruits, figs, peaches, apricots, vegetables, and cereal grains. The people got the water from sandstone aquifers. I heard that artificial oases have been successfully created by using tube wells on Sahara. Actually there is different size of oases, ranging from a pond with a group of date palms. We can see this at the deserts of Arabia. The ice-free dry valleys of Antarctica also called oases. As we know that Antartica as the coolest area in the world. Scientist called these oases because Antartica supporting life and it was surrounded by a barren ice desert. Most of oasis was located in isolated area. Oases also provide habitat for animals and even humans (Wikipedia).

I heard the history of oases was started thousand years ago. The ancient Egyptians were the witnesses of the desert in North Africa. The oases were not only for of green fertile land but also of civilization. Other source said that Oasis as a fertile place in the Libyan Desert. We can find this information in Samuel Purchas's 1613 travel book. He is English speakers were first becoming world travelers. But now we can see an oasis as the peaceful and flourishing place which is contrast with its surrounding (in the desert).

From Wikipedia I collected many oases in the world. In Africa we can see Bahariya, Siwa and Farafra Oasis (Egypt), Gaberoun and Kufra Oasis (Libya), M'Zab Valley, Timimoun and Ouargla (Algeria), Tafilalt (Morocco), Tozeurv(Tunisia), but Nile River valley is claimed as the world's biggest oasis by The Guinness Book of World Records with width about 22,000 square kilometers (Egypt).

In America we can see Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, Twentynine Palms - California, Warm Springs Natural Area , Las Vegas Valley but it grown into a metropolitan area, La Cienega, New Mexico (All these oases located in United States), Huacachina (Peru), Mulege and San Ignacio, Baja California Sur (Mexico).

In Asia we can see Al-Qatif as the largest oasis on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Al Ahsa, the largest oasis in Asia (both of these oases located in Saudi Arabia), Ein Gedi (Israel), Azraq (Jordan), Liwa (United Arab Emirates), Loulan, Marin, Turpan, Yarkand (China), Tabas (Iran).
