Nine Reasons Why We Should Eat Fish
73There are many reasons why we should eat. The main reason is we should keep survive. There are many choices for us. Start from meat, chicken, bread, mash potato, fish, fruit, vegetables, etc. This time I’ll talk about fish. Fish is one of healthy material for cooking. Actually we can choose freshwater fish or saltwater fish. Generally we get many benefits by consume fish. Fish and other seafood are healthy foods with low saturated fat, high protein, and it is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids. In addition contain protein, fish also enriched with fat, vitamins and minerals. With varies composition, depending on the type, season, spawning cycle, geographic location, and age of fish.
There are several substances inside fish which is useful for our health. Like:
- Protein: Fish contain high protein consisting of essential amino acids that are not damaged during cooking. Generally, fish contain 13-20% protein. These proteins can help the growth of brain cells. That’s why fish often called as the food to support intelligence. Fish is easily digestible even for a baby though. The proportion of protein (collagen) is also much lower than beef, which is only 3-5% of total protein. So compared to beef, fish meat feels soft and more easily crushed when chewed.
- Fat: Fat content ranged between 1-20%, mostly is unsaturated fatty acids which is actually useful to lowering blood cholesterol levels and omega-3 also. These substances are useful to increase immunity, reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, inhibit the growth of some types of cancer and preserve brain function, especially related with memory.
- Vitamins: There are two groups of vitamins in fish. The first group is water-soluble vitamins, including vitamin B6, B12, Biotin and Niacin. This vitamin is found in many fish with dark flesh. The second group is fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A and D). This vitamin is contained in the fish oil.
- Mineral: The number of mineral content in the fish is quite a lot. Such as: magnesium (strengthens bones, muscles, nutrition), iodine (to prevent goiter pain & low IQ), iron (to prevent anemia), zinc (boost immunity, speed healing of wounds) and selenium (prevent cancer, maintain tissue elasticity with vitamin E) so it's good to prevent premature aging.
Here are some benefits you can get by eating fish:
- Lowering blood pressure. Fish oil is very useful for lowering blood pressure. However, consuming lots of fish oil is not recommended. Just consume this wisely.
- Cardiovascular health. Omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fish have been proven beneficial for the heart, arteries and veins that create your cardiovascular system. By consume fish regularly may help prevent heart disease and heart failure by preventing the accumulation of triglycerides, reduced levels of excess triglycerides, increase HDL (good cholesterol) and prevent blood clotting. Studies by experts from the Harvard School of Public Health concluded, eating up to two portions of fish a week can reduce the risk of death from heart disease tripled.
- Reduce the risk of cancer. Omega 3 in fish has been proven to help prevent the three most common types of cancer, like: breast cancer, colon and prostate. Fish oil supplements can also help patients suffering from hyperlipidemia. That's why we can easily found fish oil supplement in the market.
- Fight inflammation. Fish and especially oil fish have anti-inflammatory properties. The fish is effective in reducing inflammation in blood and tissues. Omega-3 fatty acids inside fish oils give positive effect on the inflammatory response. So, it’s very helpful in reducing arthritis, prostate inflammation and bladder inflammation.
- Improve brain function. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish help the brain development. Intake of omega-3 right can help improve mental focus in children and adults. The researchers also discovered the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in fish improve brain development for infants and children. That’s why I also suggest my student to eat more fishes for their menu. I know it hard for parents to force their kids to eat fish, but they can use variety menu. So their kids will love to eat fish. A new study suggests that fish oil supplements can improve memory in adults.
- Healthy eyes. Consumption of fish is very good because they have the ability to improve vision. Fish can fight the degeneration of the macula (central retina), glaucoma and dry eye syndrome. A new study finds that people who eat at least two portions of fish per week can prevent macular degeneration (blindness related with age) than those who didn’t ate fish at all. That’s why Japanese people who like to eat fish have a strong vision and a longer life.
- Solution for depression. Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil useful to reduce depression and anxiety. Studies have proven that people who eat lots of fish have lower levels of depression.
- Skin Care. Consumption of fish helps to maintain healthy skin. According to a study published in the Journal of Lipid Research, omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil can delay the aging process of skin and help to prevent wrinkles. There’s a new research said that fish oil supplements, can keep the skin from damage caused by sun exposure.
- Lose weight. According to a study conducted at the University of Georgia, fish oil with DHA useful to reduce fat accumulation in the body. Previous studies also shown that consumption of fish oil capsules followed by exercising more effective in lowering fat. I thought many people will love this section.

Fish Rule! Pras this is extra fine article on benefits of fish and you have laid it out here in top A-one form. I've found a certain Cod Liver Oil to be very effective too my friend.
Fishing is a popular sport where I live and other places I have lived. The lakes and fishing draw many tourists.I am not sure if people fish because they like to eat the fish, sport of catching the fish or just an excuse to get out by one of the lakes and relaxing. When I lived in Illinois people fish more on the rivers and Catfish was popular.I haven't fished since I was a boy but I still like living near the water. Catfish,by the way, is very tasty fish--although most of it is raised on "fish farm" in the southern United States, I think. In Minnesota and Wisconsin such fish as Walleye Pike,Northern Pike, Perch, Sunfish are popular game fish as well as good eating.
Great Hub - I will have to try some or your recipes. They sound delicious. Thanks for sharing
All great reasons we should eat more fish and have a better and more healthy diet.
Great hub as always, Prasetio. Yes, fish is crucial. It is unfortunate that fresh fish has become quite expensive where we live. The foods that are so good for us, should be affordable enough for everybody.
Seafood is a major part of my diet Pras....Thanks For Sharing.;)
Oh Mama Mia! This is very interesting and making me hungry too. I would like to try Salmon Quiche for a change from Ham Quiche.
Prasetio, I like fish but I hate touching it when it's raw. lol.
Great Hub. :)
Fish is very healthy and also tasty. Nothing can compare to a good cooked fish dish! Unfortunately fish has become rather expensive here too and some of the fish that was available in every restaurant and fish shop 10-15 years ago can’t be bought or found at all any more. But your hub is as always excellent and the recipes looks very tasty and I am glad that the fish listed in the recipes still can be found:) Your hub shows the great importance why we should eat fish!
Thanks prasetio,
Tina
Fascinating fish facts, pras. Thank you for reminding us of the benefits of this fascinating, finny food.
Love the photo. The fisherman looks very, very happy. The fish, not so!
Very useful article. I like to eat all fishes especially the hilsha fish. Hilsha is our national fish. Its taste is outstanding.
Thanks for the delicious recipes. I love fish and I grilled a whole red snapper last week-end for the first time. It was fantastic. Now I have your recipes to try.
Thanks Prasetio. You gave excellent reasons to be eating more fish and the recipes sound good. Haven't had a quiche in a while. Just might give this one a try.
Hi Pras, I'm not a big sea food fan, like crab, lobster and octopus, but i do have tuna and salmon quite often. We also have tuna casseroles and fresh salmon wrapped in pastry. You are fitter than Popeye with your healthy diet and will live to 100 with a sharp brain.
I have baby spinach leaves with my tuna or salmon sandwiches, but is that cruel?:)
Hi Prasetio,
You have given us 9 excellent reasons why fish is good for us. Voted up and awesome.
We have to be careful of what fish we consume and how often due to mercury. The experts say mercury is not harmful in small amounts but who really knows what the long term effects are.
another useful and informative hub from you!! voted up
carrie

This is a great hub prasetio, and I will sure make that tuna casserole,it sounds delicious and I always keep plenty of tuna for my spoiled cat. I never worry about mice or snakes though so she is worth it. The salmon one looks pretty yummy too, now I have to think what do I have now that pras has made me hungry!
Great hub, great wealth of information. Thank you for sharing this. I find it very useful. Blessings to you and your family. Best regards.
A great hub Prasetio, lots of information and recipes as well. Well done voted up.
prasetio!!! I am making the salmon quiche!!!!! Sounds yummy! I do not eat as much fish as I used too. The mercury warnings have put me off from eating some fish and I try to buy wild fish most of the time....This is a very informative article......once again I have learned something new! THANK YOU!!!!! I had the best salmon and angel hair pasta dish with a cream sauce the other night. It was divine!!!!!! G
Thank you for and educational hub. Fish is important for health. God Bless You.
Thanks. I love fishes and see there are so many benefits of eating it. good one!
Great info and recipes. I try to eat fish at least twice a week. Salmon is my favorite. :)
I never knew it helped the eyes. A friends mom has cataract of the eyes. I wonder if fish will help that too. BTW, I like following healthy-minded people so I am there
Eating fish is definitely better than red meat, and it tastes great too. Wow, you have even included the recipe ! Very informative hub !
Well written and useful advices. I love fish but in the city it is not as fresh as it should be.
Prasetio, This is informative & WONDERFUL! What great suggestions, recipes and healthy tips on the benefits of including fish in your diet! WOW! Thank you for sharing another great hub! Peace & Blessings! Definitely Rated Up!!!
GOD BLESS YOU!
I just had salmon ;-)) I love informative hubs like this one. Voted up!
Thank you nephew. I'm vegetarian except for the fish. God bless.
According to those who are vegetarian for religious resons, they don't eat certain fish because they are bottom feeders that eat junk off the bottom of the sea or lake.
Hi, Prase ! Voted up. You forgot another reason to eat fish - they are delicious! I got totally off fish for awhile for a funny reason. We were lucky one summer and caught a lot of fish, croakers they were. The fresh caught fish was so good that store bought fish just seemed awful. Now that I have not caught fresh fish, I am buying it again!
(I must say that your hubs, even the straight factual hubs like this are so full of personality and reflect a sweet sense of humor)
Great hub with plenty of information. I love fish and will only eat wild caught specimens. I hear and read all the time how farmed fish is nutritionally equal to it's wild counterparts, but I don't believe it. Salmon is one of those great fish for your health, but the quality and Omega fatty acids are really diminished in Farm raised fish. I think that it is also fair to say that Marine fish are generally more nutritional than Freshwater due to the minerals in the oceans.
Thanks for the hub. Voted up
Pras - There is nothing as good for us as fish. Just the thought of a nice salmon and a side of fresh veggies make my mouth water. I always try to buy fresh fish. This hub is excellent, full of good information and glowing photos - as only "The Pras" can do! Thank you, dear friend and may you always be blessed with vibrant good health.
Rated up, and across the board!
