Hallstatt, The Land of Fairytales
75This is a beautiful day for me to write this hub. I’ll take you in a special tour. This is a amazing place for me, it’s just another fairyland. If you had read my hub about “Fairyland in the Real World”, I think this place will complete my previous hub. Have you ever known about Hallstatt? Hallstatt is a village or we can call this tiny town in the Salzkammergut, tucked away in the mountains of Austria. It is located near the Hallstätter See, it’s a lake in Hallstat. With the populations of less than 1000 residents rest on the southwestern shore of the Hallstätter See. From the pictures below we can see how this place looks like a fairyland. That’s why allstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut region has been listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1997. There are many attractions we see at this village, beside the beautiful panoramic view of the town on the lake, skiing, we can also see the world’s first salt mine, even take a trip to the World Heritage Museum, Charnel house, archeological excavations, and visit the Dachstein ice cave as well. There are a few hotels and restaurant around this small village. I’ll explain more below.
7000 years of history
I just inform to all of you about the tourist possible to tour the world’s first salt mine, 22 km from Bad Ischl. It was built into the steep slope that drops off to the Hallstatter. Salt was a valuable resource here, so this region was historically very wealthy. Based on the history of Hallstatt village, salt has been mined for 7,000 years and it’s also become a cultural history written in Hallstatt. After 7000 years buried (Iron Age) the archeologists found the prehistoric mine shafts in the mountain. The historical invention is located at the graves in the valley above the town. That’s why we can find many oldest things at Hatstatt, like: the oldest stairs, the oldest rope, the oldest backpack, the oldest glove, even also the oldest business in the world (the Salinen Austria AG).
The Hallstatt people
The Hallstatt alpine region in Austria is an amazing example of a natural landscape of great beauty which also contains evidence of early and cultural activity. Beautiful combination between nature and culture in a way that it both harmonies and complementary. The life will be more colorful and unique between the emerald-green lake and the imposing mountains. We can see how the houses built into the slopes and surrounded by the lake. There’s something good we can learn from the people of Hallstatt. They love to preserve Austria's cultural history, though their town has also experienced much misery. Based on the history, the entire village of Hallstatt was destroyed by fire in 1750. Another disaster is a terrible storm destroyed houses and took the lives of many people on the lake, this incident happened March 18, 1822. After this incident the people of Hallstatt want to share their special way of life, especially deep sense of tradition. Hopefully if we have a chance to visit this place we can discover how the special way of life there forms their character.
The street so clean and tidy
Lake Hallstatt
There’s something eye attraction we can see here. It’s Lake Hallstatt as one of the most spectacular lakes in the Salzkammergut. From outer appearance it looks like an emerald green and mysterious. During your vacation on Hallstatt, you can explore the secret of this lake on boat trips, view it from above, dive deep and even delve into underwater biology and archeology with the famous treasure hunter Gerhard Zauner. You may discover the secret about Lake Hallstatt.
World Heritage Museum
As one of the most educated place in Hallstatt, The World Heritage Museum Hallstatt displays many of cultural treasures of Hallstats from 7000 years of culture and history of this village. All the things as the history of this village that have been found in and around Hallstatt saved well in the museum. We can see about 26 main themes showing developments in the history of Hallstatt from the late Stone Age. The history based on the prehistoric salt-mining to the Celts and Romans. All the historical things include ethnography, the excavation of the ancient burial grounds, the development of the Protestant community, work and crafts also have space devoted to them in Hallstatt's World Heritage Museum.
Charnel house
It’s a place where we can find a piece of Hallstatt’s history. The history of Hallstatt can be found in the charnel house at the Maria Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Mary) buried with the artfully painted skulls of deceased residents. This idea came up due to lack of space in Hallstatt's cemetery. Because of no space was left, the people of of Hallstatt decided to dig the bones of the dead and then paint them with their names and dates of birth and death. They put the skulls in the vaulted crypt of St. Michael's church.
Beautiful souvenir
Hallstatt is a popular tourist attraction for a small-town appeal and can be toured on foot in ten minutes. We can buy beautiful traditional craftsmanship of the people in the Dachstein-Salzkammergut region. The craftspeople at the Hallstatt use traditional techniques to produce special products, like: rugged shoes, typical regional hats, real Lederhosen, and traditional jewelry. All of these products were shown in the display cabinet. There’s an exclusive selection of regional products that we can also take home with us. Especially popular souvenir which is the greatest natural treasure of Hallstatt region. Please enjoy the video below. Cheers...

This is a very beautiful area of Austria, pras, that you have described. I have visited Salzburg but never got as far as Hallstatt. When you look at the mountain tops covered with ice and the quaint villages, it is easy to visualize them as fairy tale settings.
Thanks for your descriptions and the beautiful photos.
It certainly looks a picturesque place to visit. They have made the most of the terrain, as they would have to. I just need to win ten million to visit all the wonderful places you keep unearthing.Cheers

Hi, pras, this was such a beautiful place, and the history was amazing, hidden away you have found another lovely little gem, nice one! rated up all the way! cheers nell
Prasetio-years back my wife and I drove the Danube valley into up into the mountains to a place where a friend was born. After a snow filled afternoon and night, we skidded down the mountain to the main highway which brought us to a brilliant sunny afternoon at Hallstat. Peeling off our snow jackets, we lunched along the river in the bright sun, while boats did a banner business with 4-hour back ups. Our stay was only hours, but it was a wonderful memory. Thanks for bringing it back. David

WOW! Hallstatt looks like my sort of perfect holiday destination. It looks so picturesque and magical. Oh my, I'm going to start saving right now! Very interesting town and history. Thanks for sharing this amazing place!
Hallstatt is so pristine and beautiful it does look like a dream. Austria has had a terrible history of destruction it's heartening to see how a city can be reborn and/or preserved for its natural and historic beauty.
Between your photos, video and wonderful description, I am certain that Hallstatt will be seeing more visitors. Great hub Prasetio! All the usual votes up!
Hallstatt is indeed a beautiful fairy-land town, Prasetio. If it was not for you, I would have never 'seen' it. One day I'm going to take a tour through all your hubs - that will be the nearest I will ever come to visit the most beautiful places on earth. Please know your hubs are extra-ordinary special not only in HubPages, but on the entire Internet. Take care!

Hallstatt looks like a magical and enchanting place just like we would see in a fairy tale.
Loved the pictures and video. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
Voted up,up and away!
The photo of Hallstatt taken in winter is truely breathtakingly beautiful ! I think I can just sit beside the lake and appreciate the scenery for hours. It'd be perfect to have coffee and cake while I do that. :)
The imagination of someone to make a fairytale stuck on the side of a mountain is something else pras. This really is so breathtaking. A wonderful hub as always. Voted up and across as always. Thanks so much for always giving us something to look forward to.

Hi prasetio, thank you for this wonderful trip to the beautiful village of Hallstatt.
I have been fortunate to visit Austria several times, it's one of my favourite places, but I had never visited Hallstatt.
I have enjoyed reading the history and the pictures of this lovely town, thank you for sharing, voting up. Best wishes MM
A p;efect and beautiful description and a wonderful piece on earth.
Wow, it looks quaint and historic. So beautiful, as if the pictures were taken off a postcard. And the mountains - gorgeous! Very scenic.
My family and I just visited Hallstatt in April of 2011. We drove through the mountains from our timeshare in Maria Alms. The drive was full of quaint little villages and windy roads. It was Easter week and the tour buses were not running, the salt mines and ice caves were not yet opened. We knew this but having heard what a wonderful place we just had to go see it. As you said it was like walking through a fair tale. We felt as though wad had the place to ourselves as there were few other tourists. The paths and stairs through the town seemed like secret passages that had to be explored. At each landing we paused to take in another breathtaking view... and to catch our breath from so many stairs. Even the stairs leading up to the cemetery and charnel house had tiny treasures, as if on display, that you couldn't help stare at and wonder how old it was. Visting the churches was a chance to thank God for giving humans the ability to create such beauty and wonder how they could build in such a beautiful but STEEP place. Thank you for bringing me back, mentally, to one of the most beautiful places I been privileged enough to visit.
This place looks so peaceful and relaxing. Such a great place for escapade when you want a moment away from the busy life in the urban!
