Big Hole in Guatemala, Another Weird Phenomenon
96A minute ago when I browse through internet, I found shocking news. This is really weird and I never found like this before. Actually I have seen several "big hole" around the world, such as :
- Kimberly big hole in Africa, This is the biggest hole have ever dug by people in this earth. Around 50,000 miners have been digging this hole and produce more than 3 tons of diamonds.
- Glory Hole - Monticello dam, California. This hole is the largest spillway in the world, it used if the water already exceeds and the capacity of the reservoir should be reduced.
- Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah. This hole made for mining. This activity was began in 1863 and still continues until now. At this moment the size of the hole is with a depth of 0.75 miles and wide around 2.5 miles.
- Great Blue Hole, Belize. Great Blue Hole located of 60 miles from Belize City. Great Blue Hole by National Geographic, found in the sea of Belize. A small country on the eastern coast of central America. Actually I have wrote about this in one of my hub with the title "Mysterious Phenomenon By Nature (Geological Side)" you can check it.
- Mirny Diamond Mine, Siberia. This hole created by mining (diamond). Many people argue that this is the worst human deeds that ever existed in the world. At a depth of 525 meters and a diameter of 1200 meters.
- Diavik Mine, Canada. This incredible hole that can be found 300km northeast of Yellowknife in Canada.
Back to topic. I think most of these holes who created by human will getting worst in the future if the miners didn't pay attention to the environment and the impact that would arise if the land continuously excavated. But I found interesting news and this was weirder than all these holes. It created by nature. This phenomenon was happen in Guatemala. Because of Agatha storm struck the city of Guatemala and then a large hole (sinkhole) appeared in the middle of the city. This hole mysteriously appeared after the disaster. Several local geologist can't explain the cause of this natural phenomenon. Even the geologist still examines this hole in scientifically side. It made many citizens afraid, whether this is the beginning of another natural phenomenon that is more powerful than before.

This hole has a depth of 200 feet (60 meters) where a three-story building also fell into the hole. This hole appeared in the middle of the city after the storm struck Guatemala. Actually several country also struck by tropical storm, like: Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala it self. This storm causes floods and landslides. The dead victim almost 146 people.
Actually this sink hole is not the first time in Guatemala. In the year 2007, there was a sinkhole appeared with the depth 300 feet. This hole caused by heavy rains and it made the surface of the ground collapsing. I heard some information that the Liberty statue can be drowned in this hole. We can't imagine how big and large this hole. You can see the picture below!

Many people in Guatemala city was shocked with this phenomenon. The big hole almost perfects. The cause of the sinkhole in the middle of the city was still a mystery. David Monterroso, geophysicists in Guatemala City said, "It was not a result of geological and it was not the product of earthquakes. It still difficult to explained how this phenomenon happen in the middle the city.
Magical things happen during this incident. A three-story building, actually this is a textile factory and a house was drowned in the big hole. According to local people, there's no factory worker who was killed during this incident. Because they have left the factory an hour before the giant hole formed. "Those people were lucky," I think God have a big role to save many people inside this building. Most of the people who live around the hole have been moved to another place. They worried that the hole will be widened and can swallow more homes. God give them a sign, so they have to be careful.

We all know there is no incident in this world without God intervention. We have to grateful, because we still live in the safety place and beautiful city. Living together with the people who loved us, there is a family. But we have to careful with anything happen to us. We can't predict anything in the future. But I hope the best for us and I pray for you all...amen!

Sinkholes are sometimes formed by the earth below us shifting due to earthquakes but as I understand it, that was not the case in Guatemala City. Do you think Mother Nature is trying to tell us something?

Prasetio, That is an awfully large hole. I know there have been some sink holes in FL I think around Orlando. I wouldn't want one near me.

They said that the hole was caused by improper and decaying water and sewer lines. Nothing about God, but the ignorance of the people that put those lines in thinking that they would never have to be maintained.

Great hub. I love reading about weird things. The pictures were amazing. It's amazing how the hole looks almost perfectly round. I'm glad to hear that the factory workers were not in the building when it sank.
Definitely would be a very scary thing indeed. I can't imagine what it would be like to simply have a hole form like that, for whatever reason. One of life's mysteries. There's much about our world, and the universe itself that is just so unknown, but it never fails to at least provide a high level of fascination.

Sinkholes happen at times in various locations for different reasons, but this one in Guatamala is so huge and round that it stands out from most of the rest as being very distinctive. I had seen pictures of it on the news, but the ones in your hub really bring it to life. Thank heavens so many people's lives were spared! Amazing!

What a shock this was! And still no explanation - even scarier and amazingly no deaths. We have such incidents on a smaller scale here in New York City - every now and then a hole will open and swallow a car or two - but that's due to all the underground digging for city plumbing, electricity and now for cable.

I know it cause by the human error by digging the land for city plumbing, electricity and cable. Very interesting phenomenon. I live in Florida and we had a sink hole open up in a neighbors yard over night! Very scary!

We all should remember just how delicate Mother Earth is and that we are slowly destrying it! It has the capability to support all of us for many, many generations but it takes the efforts of each of us to help her survive! We have such a great gift in Mother Earth and most people take her for granted! Just a shame!

Nice hub and the pictures....I found it quite interesting that all the things that are happening are near the Bermuda triangle. Florida, Guatemela, and all those cities are very close to the Bermuda Triangle. Yet, Bermuda triangle itself is a mystery to us. People say that it has to do with it's gravity that is very high compared to other places in the world. I was thinking about it and somehow, I related it to this sinkhole and it was actually making sense. It could be an intense gravity that could've pulled down the whole building, making a big sink hole. And I think it's the effect of the gravity from the Bermuda triangles that is doing all these strange phenomenon...That's a very rough opinion of mine..but Allah knows the best.
