Banking Crime Through ATM Machine
65My daily activity is read a newspaper. I was surprised read about the headline in my local newspaper. The head line is "ATM viewed by others, all the saving gone". And this is become a hot topic in television and newspaper. All day they shown about this topic. This crime was threatening my country.
The first case was happened in Bali. As we know Bali is the beautiful Island. The wonderful place for traveling. Julia Robert also made the newest movie in Bali island. This island is part of my country. Back this topic. This is a new way in the world of banking crimes. Stolen the money from ATM machine was haunting the bank's customers right now. My fear is this crime also threatens other regions. Including my region.
The theft mode is recording (taping) and reading (skimming) magnetic data (such as PIN number) of ATM card. It could happen when the bank customer was taking their money trough ATM machine. Beside using taping and reading mode, there is new theft mode using micro camera. At least more than 200 bank customer reported they lost their money around $100 until $2000. It look from the saving book. Whereas they didn't do any transactions or taking money. The number of victims still increasing also the amount of the money.
Police are still waiting for other reports while investigating the cause. The number of money was stolen more than $50000. The result of temporary investigation is the thief
placing chips on the ATM machine to record the data from the card and
also the installation of hidden cameras to know the PIN number
of the customer. From the this data they made new ATM card to stole the money.
By taping and skimming they could copy the magnetic data from ATM card. To get that data, the thief placed the reading device (skimming) and recording device (taping) inside the inlet section (hole to take the money at ATM machines). While the card was inserted in the machine, all the data will recorded.
The other way is by placing the micro camera. This camera was placed above the keyboard of ATM machine. Based the finger movement (when we type the PIN number on the keyboard), the thief will know the secret number (PIN number) of the customer.
Actually I am worried if this incident happen to me. And all my saving will gone. Have you ever heard about this theft mode. Or you have experience related with this topic. Please share in this hub. I'll wait your comment. Thanks

Good hub but mostly highly electro-techical. There are simple ways. The fraudulent person may insert an ordinary paper in the ATM slot. When some customer inserts the Debit Card, the machines asks for PIN code and then the amount to be withdrawn. After necessary checking, the machine would say "take out your card" but the card will remain stuck in the machine. The customer would be persuaded to go to the nearby branch of the bank and in meanwhile, the fraudulant person would take out the card using some devise like a pin or knife and also take away the money.
You are right, hidden camera would do a lot to stem the tide of theft.
Dear prasetio20: you should receive your money back at least part of it. This happened to me during the recent Christmas holidays. Someone tried to use my bank card number to purchase tickets to Hawaii. My bank, wisely restricted my account because the purchase did not fit my buying profile. Luckily when I tried to purchase some items online I learned my card had been restricted and my account was saved. The Lord is with you and will continue to protect and guide you. Stay away from ATM machines in convience and liquor stores. These are privately owned and there is no telling what spyware maybe attached to steal your PIN. Good luck and The Lords Blessings to you.
In India the credit card theft is going on. We should be careful in using the card in petrol bunks. They swap card; it is been connected to a computer for getting decoded. They prepare a multiple cards buy items to full credit limits in a day or two.
It is a widespread problem and on top of it the banks cover it it up because they don't want to look as unsecure. So it is even bigger than we know of. Thank you for the hub.
well i want to share another story in India. they went to steal the money in the ATM. they could not . then they lifted the whole ATM machine and took around 15 kms. then they tried for hours but could not get it opened for them. they left it without money.
after two days the police recovered the machine all worked -out but with all the money.
Appropriate ending to theft multifunctions! Great to see the bad guys get foiled for once. Someone took checks from our mailbox once (the if you need them kind you get with some credit cards and I never used) and wrote them - even had an ID with my name on it, etc. Luckily my husband is an accountant and checks accounts probably every day or tracks things quite closely so he caught it before any more damage was done - but what a hassle. Especially in these times, wouldn't you think folks could think of something constructive to do? There will always be crime though I guess and you just have to protect yourself as best you can but I think too if someone tapped your accounts, there is insurance to help you recover it. Hopefully. Will have to keep an eye on this subject!
Prasetio, I have read more about this problem lately and I would never use an ATM at night. I have started paying for groceries with my ATM card then just getting some extra money at that time. The other option would be to try and go inside the bank. It's sad some theifs ruin it for everyone.
You really have to be careful. Thanks for the information; I will definitely look around at ATM's for things that aren't suppost to be there, and I will shield the keyboard when I type.
I've heard of this problem, and it seems to be on the rise. Thanks for this reminder.
This has already happened in the UK in recent years and we were warned to look for strange attachments on the ATM machines
Fantastic article my friend, and your pictures are great. As technolegy grows the theifs are becoming smarting, we all need to beware of our surrounding and activities we do. Thank you for sharing.
I learned a lot about ATM scams on your Hub. Good job Prasetio. I would have thought Indonesians did do this kind of stuff, but we're all human across the globe. Down with such fraud and theft! Try my Hubs sometime. Would like to see your comments on what I write. Thanks, Don White dusanotes
Hi Pras, yes I heard about the news and almost make a new economic turnmoil, I heard that in Semarang there's a rush in one of the big bank there.
Well, I think we could avoid this crime by changing our PIN frequently and not to put our money in just one single account. I mean there is one specific account just for saving and the other for daily transactions and we may check our balance daily, I used to check mine with m-banking daily. Hope this crime will apprehended quickly, thank's for sharing Pras :)
I heard about the hidden cameras been used to know about the pin number. But I never come across such an incident.
I heard about taping and skimmimg, but not about the hidden camera device. Seems theives are a step ahead all the time.
Great hub P.
Cheers
Nice hub, good info to know, prasetio. I seen something similar to this on TV. Thanks for sharing.
Your hub very well explains potential ATM crimes. Very good
The technology to do this is incredibly easy to purchase and use. I've used card read/writers in the course of working for companies; a quick search on Google or eBay exposes readily available products.
At the end of the day, you're moving ones and zeroes around on tape. What can be read, can be copied. And what can be copied can be read.
Thank you for this educational Hub. It is and important hub that will help fight theft. God Bless You and your precious loved ones.
I once was a victim of check fraud. A gang working out of vallejo, ca., walked into a wells fargo bank and withdrew all of my business savings. The person actually went to 3 different locations to make the transactions. So I know this can happen. Thank you for your hub on banking crime, prasetio. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone elso out there. Voted up on your hub.

Hello,
You know I have heard before where thieves will put up a board that says you can clean your debit card, anyways it is just a scam and they rip you off. Do not worry,God will look after you. If someone does do this in Canada usually the bank would cover. In fact in our country unless the amount is over $50,000.00 the banks do no investigation.
