I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
(Written by Sammy Lerner, quoted in Popeye: The First Fifty Years by Bud Sagendorf)
I thought start from kids, adult until older knew him so well. Do we have to follow him? Before we decide to eat spinach, we have to know this vegetable closer than before. Please continue to read…..
Spinach is kind of vegetables known by the scientific name Amaranthus spp (in Greek, Amaranth means eternal). Spinach was originally known as an ornamental plant. But after many people recognize the benefit of spinach for health and contain various nutrients, this plant also promoted as a food source as well. Actually spinach has about 60 genera that are divided into approximately 800 species. However, this plant divided into two kinds of spinach, wild spinach and cultivation spinach.
Do you love "spinach" like him?
Spinach as the king of vegetables
I know, maybe some of us knew this plants very well as more than just vegetables, because this is the king of vegetables. We may have different perception about this. I’ll try to explain later. In 100 grams of spinach contained 0.7 g fiber, 92.9 grams water, 90 mg calcium, 29.0 mg phosphorus, 3.8 mg iron, 2.7 g carbohydrates, 2.1 grams protein, 131.0 mg sodium, 0.2 grams fat, 0.15 mg vitamin B2, 0.08 mg vitamin B1, 0.7 mg niacin, 76.7 mg vitamin C, 385.0 mg potassium, 4080 mcg beta-carotene. Because of high nutritional content, spinach is often referred to as the “King of vegetables”.
The benefit of vegetables for health
The content of folic acid and oxalic acid inside spinach make this vegetable also good to help various health problems, such as: lowering cholesterol, prevent gum disease, treat eczema, asthma, Face skin treatment, scalp and hair. The most beneficial of spinach is treating less passionate and lethargic as a sign of lack of blood.

We should remember!
Though the spinach has a lot of benefit, but it still has limitations. We know the weakness of spinach in cooking process. We should not cook spinach with an aluminum pan. Aluminum can caused poison due the reaction of iron which was contained in spinach.
We should not eat spinach more than five hours after cooking. And like other vegetables, spinach is also not good if cooked too long on the fire because it causes a lot of wasted nutrients.
Do not be reheated! Spinach containing iron or ferrous (Fe2 +) which is good for the body. However, if reheated, there’s an oxidation process in spinach. Oxidation is the process of binding of oxygen. So Fe2 + will be changed to Fe3 + or ferric compounds that are toxic to the body.
Eaten immediately! We know that spinach containing iron, but spinach also contains nitrate (NO3). But if too long contact with air, this substance would turn into nitrite (NO2) which compounds are colorless, odorless, and poisoned. So, spinach should be eaten once cooked.
Choose fresh spinach. When the spinach is stored in the refrigerator for two weeks, nitrite levels will rise to 300 mg per kg. In other words, within 1 day of storage, nitrite compounds will be rise at 7 percent.
The most important thing to note is for those who suffer from gout and rheumatism. They should not consume vegetables this type because it can cause intense pain and excessive uric acid. This occurs because the high purine substances in spinach. Purine is then converted into uric acid in the body.
Fresh spinach from the garden!

Like most kids in my day I did not like spinach even if Popeye did. As I am older I have come to like it in salads and soups.Informative hub.voted up and useful.
I watched Popeye all the time, he was one of my favorites. But I would not eat spinach until about ten years ago. I make a spinach salad but I still am not crazy about cooked spinach although I do not mind it in lasagna or soups. A local bakery here makes a really nice bun that has spinach and feta cheese that is very good. Really like you hub.
Up and useful.
Thanks for this informative article about Spinach. It is a vegetable that I like and the recipes looks so tasty. I especially like the crispy spinach snack, not the first thing one think of using spinach for! I will bookmark this and try it!
Voted up, useful!

Hi, Pras.Loved the spinach, too! Greeks would like to eat it by sauteing it with handful of parboiled rice and egg or baked spinach. For Filipinos, many are not familiar with it yet, but we have our local version of it, the local spinach or the kintsay (Chinese Spinach).
Maybe you can add other varieties of spinach, too! Ratep it up for this!!!
Great hub as always Prasetio. I loves me spinach! Peace!! Tom
I've never been a fan of cooked spinach, pras, but I know it is good for you so I often eat a spinach salad. Popeye swore it made him strong. I can see him now strutting about with a pipe in his mouth, muttering, "I yam what I yam."
Thanks for the nifty crispy spinach snack; sounds delicious.
Love all the interesting facts about spinach. I didn't know you cook as well--the crispy spinach looks fabulous and I'm going to try it. Thanks and rated up.
To be frank, I hate spinach, it does not taste good but base on your information above, I shall subscribe to a Spinach TRIAL program!

Pres, I love spinach, always have. I like it in a salad or cooked with a little bit of vinegar and sugar. Thank's for the warning about not cooking in aluminium. I was unaware about this.

Hi prasetio, I love spinach and have even grown it in my garden, loved the great recipes to !

I love a fresh spinach salad but I must admit your recipe sounds tempting too. I'll have to give it a try. I appreciate some of the warnings you provided. I didn't know about not using an aluminum pan. Good to know!
Tahnk you for giving so much useful information.
A fascinating hub as always. Please tell me Prasetio does the human body fully utilise the iron from spinach. I was always taught that it was a myth about the iron content because the way that iron is stored in spinach is not beneficial to the human body. Just curious that's all! I prefer raw spinach in salads. Thanks for the warning about aluminium pans - they are poisonous and I ditched mine some time ago thankfully!
I use spinach in everything I can from eggs to enchiladas....great hub, Prasetio!
I love spinach, but I did not know it is bad for people who suffer from rheumatism. Thanks a lot for this informative article, prasetio! Take care!
i don't love Spanish a lot but still eat it because of its beneficial effect and guess what! i also use to cook that spinach snack recipe with a little change. Any way very informative hub

Spinach with artichoke tempura sounds amazing! Great information in this hub. Spinach is definitely an underrated vegetable. Hopefully this hub will encourage more people to give it a try.
HI, Prasetio - I did not know that you should not reheat spinach. But that does not happen here - we eat it all. I love spinach, for its beautiful color, its nutrients, and its versatility. I put fresh spinach on a sandwich or wrap - spinach is the new lettuce!
Voted up and God Bless!
Great information and research Pras ~ thank you so much!
Prasetio, the Crispy Spinach Snack sounds so interesting, I an wait to try it. Spinach is certainly an amazing food. I have learned much today. Up and useful.
Prasetio, I love spinach, and its great to know all its benefits. I've been eating it since a child but this is the first I have ever heard of any of the toxic effects that you have to be careful of! I can't believe that no one ever passed those on or it is not common knowledge! Thanks so much for the great information, excellent article!
We love spinach in my house! I add garlic seasoning and butter, it's delicious, and very nutritious as you stated. I never thought it could be used for facial and hair care, but with all of the nutrients, I believe it to be true. Thanks for sharing this information and for a well written hub. Have a great day prasetio30!!! v/r
I eat spinach almost every day. I never realized that it should be eaten promptly after cooking. Glad to know about that. In the summer months, I grow my own spinach. As a child, I learned to eat spinach with a few drops of vinegar. I still like it that way.
I also add spinach to butter beans, sauteed in garlic and a little turmeric. I love this hub, Prasetio, and will try the wonderful recipies you have so generously provided.
I have voted up, useful and awesome. Blessings to you, my friend!
Wow, so many new information about spinach here. Good to know them. I should remember not to reheat them. And the recipes look yummy too. I'd like to try the spinach juice. Voted up, useful and awesome. Well written and very informative.

Hey there brother! Great article. I am not much on spinach but I can appreciate some hard work. My wife enjoys it quite much. I am sure she would love to try this snack. As for myself, I will stick to my steak! See ya later.
Great hub! I use to hate eating spinach as a child. It would give me an instant gag reflex. Now, I enjoy eating it all the time. Very useful information! Thanks!
Great advice and great recipes (especially the healing ones). Wow! All that nasty info on iron poisoning is scary. I never knew that reheated spinach could be problematic. Thanks for the tip!
This is a wonderful hub. Spinach is a valuable green! I appreciate this hub. Another great work dear nephew!
This is very interesting... especially the parts about how spinach can turn dangerous. These were things I was not aware of. Thanks for the tips! :)
I love spinach and needed another read nephew. No cooking spinach with aluminum. I'll be back. God bless.
Great information here! Although I don't know about the spinach "shake"- might take some getting used to! But thank you for all of the remedies and great vitamin information. I'm going to make my kids read this!
It is perfectly safe to reheat spinach, by the way. You should really research that myth prior to posting something like that. Simply an old wive's tale with no scientific proof behind it...
Very interesting facts here! Very helpful :) Thanks for the recipe at the end too, that's a good one!
