A Giant Gecko Worth $19 Millions, a Surprising Business
86Amazing, this word came out from my mouth after read the headline in my local newspaper. There was a teenager found a giant gecko on the border of Nunukan (Kalimantan Island and Malaysia). His name Arbin. With weight around 64 kilograms. Maybe this was usual news, but there is something make me surprised. This giant gecko worth $19 millions. Tribun kaltim newspaper was covering this news. After that many entrepreneur or business owner make a phone call Tribun Kaltim to get information about this gecko. But unfortunately this giant gecko was sold by someone from Indonesia. Arbin said that this gecko brought to China. Although this animal has sold but there are many people still want to buy this gecko with the higher price. They don't get much information from Arbin. Another thing which makes me surprised was there's a man who want to buy this gecko $2,7 millions per ounces. You can calculate how much money he will spend only for a gecko. His name Andi Makkuraga Hidayat. He is gecko entrepreneurs. Almost three years he ran this business. So far the largest gecko which he was bought around five kilograms. This was become great business for the people in my country . They have a new job as a gecko's hunter. But not all the people interested with this animal. People who have passion to get a lot of money and use the good chance. They use their leisure time to hunt the gecko. Most of them who live in the village which there are many trees. And they also hunt this animal in the forest. There are a lot of information which said that this animal worth thousands until hundred thousands dollar. During this time, the voice of gecko is often used to predict the weather. but recently the demand for these reptiles are higher than before. I get some information about the list of the price of gecko:
- 2.5 ounce (7875 grams,) worth $550
- 3 ounce - 3,6 ounce (85.05 grams - 102,06 grams) worth $5500
- 3.7 ounce - 3.9 ounce (104,89 grams - 110.5 grams) worth $8300
- above 4 ounce (113.4 grams) worth $11000 per ounce
Many people hunt geckos because it has become one of Indonesia's export goods. Each day about 3,000 geckos were exported. There is a farm which produce geckos. This farm located in Probolinggo, East Java.Beside as a farm, the owner of this place also as an exporter. To meets the demand from China, Japan and some countries in Southeast Asia. These geckos have dried in this farm. However, not all geckos can be exported. Gecko which weight above 3.5 ounces.
The owner of the farm is Didik. His father also has gecko breeding business. He always exported geckos in China, Taiwan, even Japan. He got $33000 every month, with 200 employees. He starts his business from 1990's. Right now he became gecko entrepreneur.

AIDS/HIV is deadly disease.Because theres is no medicine to cure AIDS/HIV. I found an information that gecko can be cure AIDS/HIV. If it's true, I think this is a wonders of medicine world. But unfortunately I can't get good reference about that. Many people said that gecko as an alternative solution for AIDS/HIV. But the geckos has meet the limited weight about 4 ounce. the oldest of gecko and the largest one has much more enzyme. I also heard that gecko have booked by Japan and Taiwan people as a medium of AIDS drug research.
Many people believe that gecko also as an alternative for itching and asthma medication. It has believed for a long time ago. I hope it really can be cure an AIDS/HIV. I wish the best for good purpose, especially for mankind...amen.

But for some people they have do everything to survive. And because of this news, many people like doing a "race" to get gecko for export commodity. For the main purpose "Money".
But the farm in Probolinggo give a solution, they have gecko breeding. So the population in nature like at the forest still exist. But another wish for many people, this was can be a solution to save many lives because of AIDS/HIV.

I want to show the giant gecko and I think it really rare in this world. And we know another benefit of gecko for the medicine field.

Although I don't like the thought of exploiting the geckos. Even a gecko farm doesn't sound too appealing to me. With everything that happens in slaughterhouses to farm animals, I wouldn't like the thought of having another animal being part of a similar process. We probably won't be eating geckos at McDonald's anytime soon, but your Hub illustrates some of the uses of geckos as objects, and not living beings.
I guess this was a bit of a rant, not at all aimed at you prasetio. I understand the efforts required to make money and if geckos help in that aspect, then it's good in a way. I just wish there were better alternatives.

I inherited a Leopard Gecko and have found it to much more than something that just hides under a rock all day long. I was surprised at how sociable it was and how it likes being handled. The kids are fascinated watching it hunt. Mind you, we have it in a huge vivarium. hen the crickets start up, it's just like being on vacation!

You said the pic was taken by Arbin himself then when ppl frm the news wanted to see the real thing he claimed it had been sold to another guy... then the whole thing is on one man's words. There was no real witnesses except for the ppl around him... With the technology nows a day... it hards to believe it... any professional news writer will digs for proof before reporting such a thing. Very cute hub, I love Gecko's. We do have similar ones here, they only come out at night, little white geckos with spots, they are pretty small, I capture the ones that get stuck in my house, and let them go free, they are soooo cute!!
I do not think they should kill them for medicine though, to stop Aids/HIV is educating people on how not to get it in the first place, one of the most prominent ways people get it is being abused by older men, and Africa and many places have "cures" so they can keep raping children after they contract it, but it's best to educate people on the truth of it, and not to mistreat the ones who get it.

Such a cute creature.If it can be used to cure HIV/AIDS it can stop the misery of millions of children with the deadly disease.but more research must be done.If this is true effort must be made to breed this lovely creature so that people wont hunt them to extinction.Once scientist know the secret chemical in the gecko then similar chemical can be produced in large scale using the knowledge of genetic engineerig.This way the disease is treated while the killing can stop

I must say your hubpage is very interesting and enlightening. And the informations about geckos being a possibility to cure aids/hiv and other serious ailments is certain a very encouraging news indeed. I am just curious though, where to find buyers for all those giant geckos? A family friends had several over-grown geckos living in their yards for so many years from just babies to adults now. They feed them with insects/grasshopers/flies etc.. but it is now not easy to maintain as they are always hungry all the time! So, maybe this is a good way to let go some of them..? woow it really amazing... in Malaysia this species also were hunting for money... I am very interset to know more about the farming geckos in Indonesia... now i;m conducting study about the animals uses for traditional medicine.. this is really impressive... tq for the info...
One more... study done showed this species worked to cure hyperglycemia (diabetic)... another study done by researchers from china powder from drying geckos and fresh meat of geckos worked as antitumor... it's really worked... :)but this research still conducting to test on human....

This article makes me sad - a gecko that looks exactly like this has lived in my garage for the last five years and he's a really cool character with his own personality. He has come to trust my wife and I and our cats have learned to leave him alone in peace. Pity humans are so insensitive to the suffering they cause in the world. Yes, Chinese will buy all sorts of wildlife for their traditional medicine. They won't spend millions on a Gekko though, specially if you can just breed them or catch them.

sir i would like to comment that your calculation of ounce to grams is incorrect? 1 ounce is equivalent to 28.35..how come your computation is 2.5 ounce is equivalent to 250 grams?when in fact if you compute 2.5 ounce, its only equiavlent to 70.87 grams ?pls justify

I know that geckos are abundant there and big bucks can be made through trade. However you should keep in mind that excessive collection and trade coupled with habitat destruction may deciminate these beautiful creatures. It will in turn disturb the intricate balance of nature. There are no scientific studies proving the veracity of the claims of many that geckos have medicinal value.

Well i think killing geckos for aids will be a big mistakes... If it is true that that it can cure aids, more unfaithful and morality will be done. Gecko issue in the Philippines, especially in Davao City, is almost as quiet as a silent night. Though i don't know exactly if the "gecko craze" is really over. In my point of view, the issue is dying the natural way. My friends are no longer that interested with regards to gecko. yes you are correct about the philippine law on "export-import" very strict BUT buyers here have a special permit to allow them to do freely on doing bussiness in regrds to geckos.. thats proven! money talks most of the time especially when the amount mounts to millions of pesos.

But unfortunately, the buyers is from my country. It's so difficult for transaction with different country. They want the real geckos in front of him, it has been tested by the doctor also. i see.. though it maybe hard trusting someone.. but those buyers that you know dont have the plans to go here in the philippines where geckos are easy to get.. big geckos! and capturing of this animal are not that rampant yet. on the other hand if you know some who wants to do it just send me a message here.. theres my contact #. i want to transact directly is my main reason.. its the security of the bussiness itself.

i'm from Philippines..I came across this hubpage because a friend of mine is doing a research if there's really a "trading of geckos" that exists in our country.He asked me to take a look at the news/article that you've posted. It's really amazing that gecko can grow as much as that!! here in our country,the said to be gecko traders are looking for 300grams and above.I don't even had an experience to see a gecko weighing 300 grams..lot of people here now are hunting geckos but can't find the desired weight of 300grams and above.Especially that hunting geckos is forbidden/illegal in our government.But many people wants to have easy money.It's a black market I suppose..good for your country that its legal.

Even for weight about 400 grams is like a mystical geckos. They live in unseen world. I agree with you about the money. I can't lie to you that geckos is very valuable and most of people love something "instant". The fact said that get a gecko with good quality quite difficult, right. Success for you.

All the geckos I've seen were green. Since we see the lovable gecko that is a mascot for an insurance company all the time Americans may be upset to see so many dead ones.
